Radhanath Swami puts me in a Daze

“It’s the same as yesterday,” Radhanath Swami mumbled, as his face contorted with discomfort. Nausea had been nagging his frail body for days, and the previous night he had called me up for medical advice. Now hearing that my advice was of no avail, I felt deflated. I excused myself and wandered into the cavernous prayer hall of Radha Gopinath temple, a few minutes walk from his room. It was a Sunday and the weekly Sunday program, a blend of bhakti songs and bhakti discourses was to begin there in an hour’s time.

Devotees thronged in with every passing minute and soon the place was abuzz with eager anticipation of Radhanath Swami’s arrival. He was scheduled to sing and discourse. I felt sorry for the crowd for I knew of the letdown to follow. In the condition he was in, Radhanath Swami couldn’t be blamed if he were not to come.

My jaw dropped open when I saw Radhanath Swami come and take the stage. Initially, his discourse came as an amplified whisper, the microphone serving as a support to his faint voice. But with passing minutes, his enthusiasm swelled and the whisper slowly turned into a thunderous outpour of devotional conviction. Towards the end of his two hour discourse, the microphone looked redundant. Radhanath Swami then went on to lead his group in Kirtan, devotional singing, for another half hour.

I sighed and shook my head in disbelief.

Later I approached Radhanath Swami. Seeing me in a daze, he first looked amused. Then he gravely revealed his heart, which served to explain why he had stretched himself despite his bad health. “Even if God wants this nausea to remain for my whole life, my service to him will not change.”

That evening, with Radhanath Swami’s resounding discourse still echoing in my mind, I returned home struggling to comprehend the extent to which the genuine desire to serve God and humanity had the power to overcome bodily limitations.

If ever proof is needed that a pure saint can transcend his bodily conditions, this is it.

This is true love for God that Radhanath Swami has developed for the Supreme Lord, which we could only dream of achieving. However, following in his footsteps, we may yet try to achieve it one day.

“Even if God wants this nausea to remain for my whole life, my service to him will not change.” So much determination to serve GOD .I am stunned by this statement .Rarely does one see anyone so eager to serve God , most of the times we find people demanding God for facilities .Wonderful example by HH Radhanath Swami for us to follow .Do not try to see God but try to serve Him in such a way that He is eager to see you.

Maharaj’s faith and his spirit to serve Krishna is undying. Common people like us struggle to lead our normal lives with the pressures we face. But maharaj is unfazed by the limitations of body and circumstances. Truly extra ordinary!!

Now thats something i personally have to develop that faith and conviction to serve GOD no matter what we are going through. Thank you Ajay for this nice story.

Radhanath Swami always considers himself as a servant of the devotees & hence he is able to extend himself even when his health does not support him.

I just want an excuse to not stretch myself for doing a service and Radhanath Swami is fightiing against all odds with rock solid determination to serve a higher purpose.

Radhanath Maharaj is awesome. He truly inspires people with his thoughts and action.

I feel short of words to describe this attitude of Radhanath Swami for service of Lord. Even if the Supreme Lord wants to impede your service unto Him, the real devotee does not give up the service of the Lotus feet of the Lord. I heard this multiple times in discourses. Radhanath Swami exemplified it.

This proves that spiritual energy is far superior than material energy. Glad to see such living example in this day and age.

Now this left me in daze too…what a commitment to Krishna and Prabhupada!

Radhanath Swami can take all inconveniences when it comes to serve others. But when he sees others in painful condition he puts himself in their shoes and gives them all the conveniences. Its rare to find some one like Radhanath Swami. One may say 100 things but when things are down no one comes around except someone like Radhanath Swami who is a true friend to all living entities.

One key quality of pure saints is that they are beyond the bodily needs & conditions. Radhanath Swami’s innumerable examples such as this one, clearly indicate the same.

Also reminded me of Sanatana Goswami carrying on his Govardhan seva inspite of his bodily condition, Hari das thakur insisting on carrying on his chanting.
